Restoring Peace
28th September 2011, 6:30pm to 8:30pm

Speakers: Brian Paddick and Baroness Newlove

This event will be an opportunity to feedback to the Communities and Victims Commission which was set up by David Cameron and Nick Clegg in response to the riots.

  • What motivated the rioters to wreak havoc on the nation's streets?
  • What will it take to bring lasting peace to our streets, how best can we tackle the root causes of the issues?

We would like to give you and your charity, youth group or church the opportunity to have your say as well as to listen to the voices and perspectives of others.

Riots

On 31st August, Nick Clegg comissioned the Communities and Victims panel to engage in a “grassroots review” listening to the experiences and views of young people, residents, shopkeepers, parents and community leaders who were affected by the summer wave of rioting and disorder that left a trail of destruction across the country.

Members of the Communities and Victims panel will be joining us for the evening to listen to your opinions and insights.

We will also use the opportunity to launch a campaign ‘100 Days of Peace Making, which will take place across the UK in the run up to the Olympics. This is a challenge to go back to our communities and together come up with innovative ideas for making peace.

The concept of 100 days of peace is as old as the Olympics Games themselves. During the lead up to the ancient Olympics messengers were sent across the Greek world calling for a truce between any parties involved in hostile activities to enable the Games to be carried out in a peaceful manner.

Please join us as we respond creatively to the riots.

Speakers:

Baroness Newlove :

Baroness Newlove is a community reform campaigner who came to prominence after her husband, Garry Newlove was murdered by three youths in 2007. In her report, ‘Our Vision for Safe and Active Communities’, the government’s Champion for Active Safer Communities, Baroness Newlove has detailed what residents, businesses, local agencies and central government can do to begin a generational shift in the country’s approach to activism and tackling neighbourhood crime.

Her report called for a change of culture so neighbourhoods no longer see crime, antisocial behaviour (ASB) and disorder as ‘someone else’s problem’; and for services to go beyond simply asking communities what their problems are and see them as equal partners in resolving those issues.

Brian Paddick

Brian Paddick is a former Police Commander  and Liberal Democrat candidate in the 2008 London Mayoral election is well known spokesperson on policing and community issues.
